MOONCRYS / Guide
How to tell if moonstone is real
Real moonstone shows adularescence — a soft, billowy glow that drifts across the stone as you turn it. Glass imitations look flat and glassy by comparison. Three simple checks below need no equipment.
The adularescence test
Hold the stone under a lamp and slowly rotate it. Genuine moonstone displays adularescence: a milky, moon-like sheen that floats just under the surface and moves as the angle changes. It should look soft and three-dimensional, strongest in white, blue or rainbow tones depending on the piece. If the stone looks uniformly glassy with no moving glow, be suspicious.
Bubbles vs natural inclusions
Look closely, ideally with a loupe or phone macro. Glass fakes often contain perfectly round air bubbles. Natural moonstone instead shows fine internal textures — tiny needle-like inclusions, subtle color zoning, or a slightly cloudy interior. Perfect clarity with round bubbles points to glass; natural character points to stone.
Temperature and weight
Real stone feels cool to the touch and has noticeable heft for its size. Plastic imitations feel warm and light; glass feels cool like stone but usually fails the adularescence and bubble checks above. Combine all three tests rather than trusting one alone.
Frequently asked questions
What does real moonstone look like?
A soft, billowy glow (adularescence) that moves across the stone as you turn it, over a milky white, grey, peach or rainbow body color. The glow looks three-dimensional, not painted on.
Do fake moonstones have bubbles?
Glass imitations often do — perfectly round air bubbles visible under magnification. Natural moonstone has fine inclusions and texture instead of round bubbles.
Is opalite the same as moonstone?
No. Opalite is a man-made glass with an opalescent look. It can be pretty, but it is glass, not moonstone, and it shows none of the true adularescence described above.
Does real moonstone feel cold?
Yes — like most real stones, it feels cool when you first pick it up and has a satisfying weight. Plastic fakes feel warm and unnaturally light.
