MOONCRYS / Guide
How to cleanse crystals: five methods compared
Cleansing crystal jewelry is simple: choose one of five common methods — moonlight, running water, smoke, a crystal cluster, or sound — and keep sun-sensitive or water-sensitive stones away from what harms them. Everything below is material care; we make no claims about effects.
Five methods at a glance
Moonlight: leave the piece where moonlight reaches it overnight; the gentlest option, safe for every stone. Running water: rinse briefly under clean running water, then pat fully dry — best for hard, non-porous stones. Smoke: pass the piece briefly through incense or herb smoke; keep it away from open flame. Crystal cluster: rest the jewelry on a clear-quartz or amethyst cluster for a few hours. Sound: a few minutes near a singing bowl or bell. A new piece can be cleansed once on arrival; afterwards there is no required schedule.
Stones that need extra care
Sun: amethyst, rose quartz and fluorite can fade with prolonged direct sunlight — store them away from windowsills and dashboards. Water: most of our bracelet stones tolerate a brief rinse, but soft, porous, or glued pieces should stay dry; when in doubt use moonlight or a cluster instead. Knocks: fluorite (Mohs 4) is softer than quartz and chips more easily — store it separately.
How often should you cleanse?
There is no required frequency — this is a traditional ritual, not maintenance with a schedule. Many people cleanse a new piece once before first wear, then whenever they feel like it. If you wear a piece daily in sun or sweat, a rinse and dry keeps the material itself in good shape regardless of ritual.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I cleanse my crystals?
There is no required schedule. Cleanse a new piece once on arrival if you like, then whenever you feel like it — the practice is traditional ritual, not dated maintenance.
Can fluorite go in sunlight?
Prolonged direct sunlight can fade fluorite over time. Everyday outdoor wear is fine; don't bake it on a sunny windowsill or dashboard.
Can I cleanse crystals with water?
Most hard stones tolerate a brief rinse followed by thorough drying. Keep soft, porous, or glued pieces dry, and use moonlight or a crystal cluster for those instead.
Does smoke cleansing damage stones?
Brief exposure to incense or herb smoke is fine for most stones. Keep pieces away from open flame and let them air out afterwards.
How do I know cleansing worked?
Honestly: there is no measurable test. Cleansing is a traditional ritual — we describe the practice, not effects. If the ritual feels meaningful to you, that meaning is yours.
